Me vs. my damn country

Nav Raj Pokharel

I read about the state and government for the first time when I was a college student. The subject fascinated me for a period of time leaving me in dream about the balanced systems of the democratic government that ensures natural justice, prosperity and freedom to its general people. Everything I was taught in school and I learnt at college proved to be futile and worthless to translate into practice when I entered to manhood bearing responsibilities of a good citizen, good member of my society, good and honest employee, and to live life respectfully enjoying freedom of expression. now I think not only the investment my parents put on my education, the investments the government and private sector have been increasing on schools and colleges, the foreign aids received in the sector of education and civil society, the years I spent furbishing my ability and skills in schools and college and university were very much impractical, useless and worth hocking to live an honest and respectful life in everyday situation today.
In the everyday made- reality- situation, the most ignorant are law makers, the most savaged are ministers, the most corrupts are leaders and the most louts are in state machinery. Honest few are thus compelled to wag their tails and heads to the formers’ will, assimilating the Darwin’s satire on human species as survival of the fittest. Survival of the majority of honest and skilled manpower is forced to fit right in waging their tails and nodding their heads to the tune of the worst of all on the top.
Positive changes do not take place in society without knowledge and vision of the leaders. Speeches of leaders and ministers alone do not usher the positive changes. Right solution, means and ways to achieve them, tireless work in the direction and honest monitoring are but few tools that can help the vision translate into reality with certain span of time. Who has these noble and human qualities? Leaders of this country? You have seen them, tried them and tested them.
They have their dreams to achieve. They don’t have the least dream for the country. Their followers, supporters and cadres are their people. Everything they think is right and what people suffer from are wrong. What they believe in is their ideology, you should uphold them. What you desperately want and believe is only a fantasy. Perhaps, you want electricity with affordable price your in house when you need it. It is not possible. Perhaps, you want square meal two times a day with affordable price. It is fairy tale. Perhaps, you want meritocracy in your carrier. It is injustice. Perhaps, you want guarantee for your social and professional security. They are your biased notion. Perhaps, you want peaceful environment to work and feed your families. It is possible by their grace only. Do you want equality? No way…. You will have partiality and inclusive.
My seventeen years young son told me the other day when I was basking the sun on the roof top of my house, “Do you know Baba a research recently conducted revealed that among the people who commit suicide are from different occupations, however, suicide committed by the politicians are only exceptional? I replied that I did not know. Why is it so? Putting on sly smile on his face he said,” the research reveals that people commit suicide because they very much regret their wrong doings, their emotional faculty is higher but the politicians do not have emotions therefore politicians’ suicide rate is rare.” I was immediately convinced.
I wonder why these revered leaders are most corrupt and worthless. The decisions they unanimously make are rarely productive to the country and its people. The decisions are either supportive to their coteries or cadres. I do not believe that they don’t know what they do. They do it with volition.
My educational certificates have no intrinsic value. I want to sale them if buyers are there. My experiences in different academic and vocational fields are impractical today. Honesty, labor, creativity and dedication bear no fruits today. I like to pawn them against cheaper price. Skills and depth knowledge are useless for any government jobs. They ceased to work now. What works is source and power from the top. Therefore, what I have is useless. Ironically, so have theirs. Poverty has increased since such leaders are in power. Trade deficit has been increasing dramatically because domestic productions are nil. Young generation desperately want to flee the country. Equal opportunity and meritocracy is denied. They believe they have no future here. However, the leaders are very busy delivering speeches in the media. Speeches are not important. The results are. People want positive results to bring about positive changes in the country. If the politicians can’t commit suicide, they can renounce from responsibilities. They should renounce that they are people’s representatives. I wonder what makes them leaders if they cannot see and do the things we see and are ready to do. Shall we change our place once? I am ready. Are they?
